The Spanish Pronunciation Guide:

Consonant + Vowel

CONSONANT + VOWEL (is heard as:) ||>CONSONANTVOWEL

EXAMPLES:

Note that this word-boundary dislocation could cause an inexperienced listener to deduce that the verb in question is nacer rather than hacer. <img src="con_vow2.jpg" width=550 height=220 border=0>

Now your eyes and ears will have a problem with the difference between written and spoken Spanish. The blank spaces between the printed words do not correspondingly mark the syllabic "beats" you actually hear. The word boundaries at such junctions have shifted; but you already know why, right? Because in oral Spanish phrasing, most syllables begin with a consonant regardless of where individual words in the phrase begin or end.
