Notable Notes
Spanish Notable Note: Quiet for the king!--extract from Puerta del Sol 14-05
Jonathan Holland's note from the latest issue of Puerta del Sol reveals a king willing to speak his mind.
Rarely in recent history can five words have generated so much newsprint. On November 10, 2007, as the Ibero-American summit was closing, the king, on-camera, uttered the now-famous words "¿Por qué no te callas?" to the Venezuelan president. Hugo Chávez was in the midst of a lengthy diatribe against the former Spanish prime minister José María Aznar,whom Chávez repeatedly branded a fascist. The king's statement went around the world and ended up being popular in Spanish classrooms; Chávez himself later ironically used the phrase to a journalist who had asked him an awkward question. The fact that the king used the tú rather than the usted form was just one noteworthy aspect of a moment of great symbolic significance. Rather than harm Juan Carlos's reputation, the episode seems to have increased his prestige and sealed his hard-won reputation as un hombre del pueblo.

Take a virtual trip around Paris with the videos produced by the office of the Parisian mayor. With channels including news, culture and travel, there's sure to be a video for everyone. You can even subscribe to the video channels using RSS so you'll be notified every time a new one is produced.
Kraftwerk
The legendary German electronic pioneers are touring the world this year for the first time in three years, and their website is full of great German electro content, including tour details, videos and songs. Their very detailed Wikipedia entry contains information on quite how much they have influenced other artists from David Bowie and Iggy Pop to Chicago house music.
Photosynth – See the Piazza San Marco like never before
A new technology produced by Microsoft, Photosynth allows you to view pictures in a way you never have before. If you have a computer running Windows Vista or capable of doing so, then visit Microsoft labs to download the browser plugin and see Piazza San Marco in a completely new way. Even if you're not able to run the software, have a look at this video highlighting Notre Dame in Paris to see what you're missing.
