Champs-Elysées 24-09 Issue Contents
The next issue of Champs-Elysées, 24-09, captures all the romance of Paris in spring. In our cover feature, Jean-Sébastien Petitdemange takes us up 400 feet to visit the new restaurant in the Eiffel Tower, the Jules Verne, created and owned by the famous French chef, Alain Ducasse. We then move to the Grand Palais where Philippe Goffin reviews an exhibition of the art and artifacts connected with Marie-Antoinette. This article links in nicely with our interview with Jean-Jacques Aillagon—the man responsible for Versailles's ongoing restoration and for all future projects. This former history teacher evokes the kings and queens who once lived there and also imparts some of the magic that the palace and its extensive grounds and outbuildings hold for him. While back in Paris, Gaëlle Alléhaux talks to the stage director of the Moulin Rouge about La Goulue, the painter Toulouse Lautrec, and the history of this world-renowned cabaret. Gaëlle also takes us backstage to talk to the stars of the latest show. Another highlight of issue 24-09 is Evelyne Pagès's interview with Roselyne Bachelot, who runs the government department responsible for health, youth, and sports in France. Lastly, don't miss our fun feature on the French national lottery and the current craze for scratch cards. Issue 24-09 of Champs-Elysées is shipping to subscribers.

Notable Notes
French Notable Note: French lotteries--extract from Champs-Elysées 24-09
Hugh Schofield's note from the latest issue of Champs-Elysées reveals quite how long laws in France governing gambling have been in effect.
The history of French lotteries goes back to 1539 and King François 1, who set up the first state monopoly with the Edit de Châteaurenard. He said royal control was necessary "pour porter remède aux jeux dissolus et empescher nostables bourgeois, marchans et aultres de blasphemer Dieu, de consommer leur temps, labeur, vertues et necessaire en jeux de hasard." In a forerunner of today's laws, the same edict made it illegal for foreign lotteries to operate in France. In 1700, Louis XIV set up the Grande Loterie Royale, again to raise money for state coffers. The law under which Petter Nylander is being charged goes back to 1836.

Argentinean Recipes
Food is a very important part of Argentinean culture, and the country is one of the largest food producers in the world. Famed for its steak, the Argentineans eat more beef than any other country in the world and this is reflected in the recipes that come out of the country. Idlewords.com has a great article on the culinary obsessions of the country from steak to the almost-undrinkable-by-foreigners mate, while a selection of (steak!) recipes are available on the food network.
