Notable Notes

Spanish Notable Note: Tianguis--extract from Puerta del Sol 14-05
This note from Jonathan Holland gives some great background on old Latin American food markets, and shows how little has changed over the past 500 years.

Throughout pre-Columbian America, a tianguis was pretty much what it is today--a street market and, by extension, a bustling focal point for a city. In "Life in the Provinces of the Aztec Empire," Michael Smith writes that "Aztec peasants were not simple farmers whose lives were dominated by the need to pay tribute to their elite overlords. Commoners living in both rural and urban areas of the provinces made heavy use of a thriving marketing system. They exchanged craft goods produced in their homes for a variety of foreign goods, and most of this economic activity was accomplished outside imperial control and ignored by early writers on the Aztecs." In his accessible introduction to the subject, Smith quotes Fray Durán’s The Aztecs: The History of the Indies of New Spain: "The markets were so inviting, pleasurable, appealing and gratifying to these people that great crowds attended, and still attend, them." Fray Toribio de Motolinía, the 16th-century Franciscan missionary who defended the rights of the indigenous population, wrote in his Historia de los indios de la Nueva España: "at these markets, called tianquiztli by the Indians, they sell whatever is found in this land, from gold and silver to reeds and firewood." These days, the products on sale at a tianguis are as likely to hail from China as from Mexico. Diego Rivera’s mural El Tianguis, located on a patio on Mexico’s Secretaría de Educación Pública, gives a sense of the bustling atmosphere of a tianguis. The mural can be seen at tinyurl.com/2rchmn.
